Reunión de Padres para estudiantes en Educación Bilingüe
Welcome to the Bilingual Education & English as a New Language Department
Our District is a diverse community, a microcosm of unique cultures and languages. All are welcomed and embraced.
With knowledge, respect and understanding of our differences, we are uniquely positioned to celebrate multilingualism. By viewing home languages and lived experiences as assets, we support our ELLs/MLLs in a culturally responsive sustaining way, allowing the richness of language and customs to shape how we encourage their growth in language, literacy and learning.
The Bilingual Education & ENL Department works collaboratively to prepare our students to become engaged citizens of the world.
With Equity, Innovation & Optimism

Bilingual Education & English as a New Language (ENL) Programs
Bilingual Education and English as a New Language (ENL) K-12 Program
Nyack Union Free School District takes great pleasure in welcoming students from around the world. We presently serve students that represent 14 language groups. The English as a New Language (ENL) program is designed to meet the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades K-12 whose native language is other than English. The goal of our program is to ensure that all students attain English proficiency via two programs the district offers. Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) is offered in K-2 and English as a New Language program is offered for all grade levels. The objectives of these programs are to (1) ensure that all English Language Learners develop both Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP); (2) prepare students for mainstream classes and (3) provide ongoing educational assistance. All of the outlined programs are aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
ENL Enrichment Programs
There are several enrichment opportunities available for Nyack English Language Learners. The enrichment programs offered provide additional assistance with homework, study skills, strategies for success in the classroom, academic and linguistic support. The enrichment program also promotes parental involvement using parent workshops. All programs offered are outlined below.
Before and After-school Programs
The purpose of the the Before and After-school Programs is to help assist English Language Learners with homework and address specific skill based assistance as needed.
Summer STEM Program
Research indicates that English Language Learners (ELLs) require 5-7 years to acquire language. In essence, what English Language Learners need is time. Extra time that focuses on specific skills that they are not afforded during the school day. The Summer STEM Program for ELLs is 4-6 weeks and allows for additional instructional time that integrates the four modalities (speaking, listening, reading and writing). English Language Learners will be taught engineering (building), mathematics, and science principles through a hands-on, collaborative experience that will enhance their academic, language, and social skills. Programs are offered at all grade levels during various times of the school year.
