• The Board of Education is pleased to announce Dr. Lizzette Ruiz-Giovinazzi as Interim Superintendent of Nyack Public Schools

  Dear Families, Staff and School Community,

  We hope you are enjoying your summertime, finding ways to keep cool and stay healthy. We want to provide an update regarding the Office of the Superintendent for Nyack Public Schools.

  As your Board of Education, we want to make decisions that support renewed vision for our schools and foster healing for the community we serve. We are working together to navigate through this time of significant transition. Our collective focus is to stabilize the district and secure key leadership for the new school year.

  With this in mind, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Lizzette Ruiz-Giovinazzi as Interim Superintendent of Nyack Public Schools.

  Dr. Ruiz-Giovinazzi brings a unique combination of expertise in transformative leadership and doctoral research in cultivating resilience with over twenty eight years of experience in teaching and school administration. She has demonstrated strength of character with a proven track record of educational excellence within our own district, having made a positive impact since she began her tenure with us two and a half years ago as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. She has met the challenges of this past year, bridging trust across relationships with district-wide staff, providing professional development and purposeful programming, stepping up to give administrative support that teachers, directors and principals needed. We are confident in her commitment, distinctive skills and instinctive response to uplift our students, staff and schools.

  Dr. Ruiz-Giovinazzi will continue to work closely with a dedicated team of administrators and central office staff to unify organizational leadership and prepare for the opening of schools on September 3rd. Priority is being placed on securing key administration positions, onboarding new administrators and cabinet members, creating a leadership plan and helping to ensure our staff and schools are READY to begin the new 2024-25 school year.

  We will keep the community updated with next steps as the school year progresses. Thank you for your partnership in strengthening our resolve for equity, innovation and optimism in Nyack Public Schools.

• The following press release announces the appointment of our new Assistant Superintendent of Finance & Operation, Mr Enrique Catalan.

  PRESS RELEASE 7-9-24:  Acting Superintendent Dr. Lizzette Ruiz-Giovinazzi is pleased to announce the appointment of Enrique Catalan by the Board of Education as the district’s new Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations for Nyack Public Schools, effective July 1, 2024.

  Mr. Catalan recently began his tenure in Nyack Public Schools upon serving nineteen years in a public schools setting that followed a successful career in the private sector. The district conducted an extensive search and interview process with sixteen final applications reviewed, resulting in three candidates interviewed for the position. The search committee was composed of representatives from the current administration, teacher and teaching assistant bargaining units, and Central Administration staff including members from the Business Department who will work closely with Mr. Catalan. The district extends a thank you to all who served on this committee, helping to successfully identify the candidate.

  Enrique Catalan brings a wealth of financial management and operational leadership experience in K-12 schools administration. He has a proven track record of innovative decisions and fiscal efficiency supporting educational excellence. From 2008 to 2024, Mr. Catalan oversaw financial operations at Hendrick Hudson School District in Westchester County where he created new revenue streams, passed every annual budget,
  maintained and upheld an A+ credit rating with S&P, even after Indian Point's closure and subsequent $20M revenue reduction. He has an MBA from Columbia Graduate School of Business and Masters Degrees in School Business Administration and in School District Administration from Mercy College.

  In addition to Mr. Catalan’s extensive resume and body of work in the financial arena, he has demonstrated a commitment to community. He has been instrumental in creating opportunities for student success, access to technology and academic advancement. He is a leader in the Lower Hudson Association of Business Officials (LHASBO), having served as president of the Association of Business Officials (ASBO) from Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES for fifteen years and treasurer of LHASBO for the past twelve years.

  When he is not working, Mr. Catalan enjoys traveling with his wife and two sons, fly-fishing in the Housatonic, and is looking forward to exploring the rivers and streams of Rockland County.

  As he steps into this new role, Mr. Catalan will continue his dedication to the mission of ensuring the financial health of public schools, maximizing the reach of potential for each and every student in Nyack Public Schools. Please join us in welcoming Enrique Catalan into our school community.

• The Board of Education for Nyack Public Schools released the following statement on June 28, 2024 to the staff, families and community:

  Good Afternoon Families,

  Please see the statement sent on behalf of the District's BOE to the Staff, Families and Community of Nyack Public Schools:

  The Nyack Union Free School District Board of Education and Superintendent Susan Yom have mutually agreed to separate. Ms. Yom has resigned from her position, effective June 30th, 2024. 

  The District's Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Lizzette Ruiz-Giovinazzi, will assume the duties of Acting Superintendent as the Board explores next steps. The Board of Education is actively working on a plan for the transition process to continue advancing its mission of equity, innovation and optimism. 

  As always, we will keep the community updated on next steps as soon as possible; your input and support are very important to us.

  Ms Yom has requested that we relay the following statement:

  As I leave Nyack, I am filled with immense gratitude for the incredible journey we've shared. The unwavering dedication of our staff and the boundless potential of our students have made this an unforgettable chapter in my career. Together, we've achieved great milestones and created a nurturing environment for learning and growth while advancing literacy for all with systems of support. I will deeply miss the camaraderie and spirit of this remarkable community. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives and for the many wonderful memories.

• Anonymous Alerts is a communications tool posted on our website to anonymously report suspicious or threatening behavior. Find out more:

  The Nyack Public Schools will be reinstating Anonymous Alerts, a communications tool that makes it easier to anonymously report suspicious, threatening or other concerning behaviors. A tab entitled Anonymous Alerts has been added in the navigation bar at the top of our website to easily access this tool. 

  Anonymous Alerts allows students or parents to quickly, easily, and anonymously report urgent information to school officials across all of our school campuses. The system encourages students, parents and staff to confidentially report bullying, cyber-bullying, and other sensitive topics through private messages to our administration. 

  How do I place an incident report from Internet connected computers/tablets?

  • Go to https://report.anonymousalerts.com/nyackufsd from any Internet connected device.
  • Click on the web button called “Anonymous Alerts”. Fill out your incident report.

  How do I place a report from an iPhone or Android phone?

  • From the iPhone Store, download the free app by searching for “Anonymous Alerts”. If you have an Android phone, go to the Play Store, search for “Anonymous Alerts” and download.
    1. After downloading the app, click on it, enter activation code nyackufsd
