  • An important letter to parents and guardians regarding the popular Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" has been sent by the Superintendent...

The letter, dated April 24th, 2017, is accompanied by a document from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) that contains information for parents and guardians to read and take into consideration. Our District recognizes that schools have "an important role in preventing youth suicide, and being aware of potential risk factors in students' lives is vital to this responsibility."   Feel free to contact Dr. Montesano's office should you need more information or support.

Thank you for your attention to this very important matter. The Dr. Montesano's letter and the NASP document are attached, below.

Parents and Guardians: the District has a NEW Media Release/Opt Out protocol that will go into effect this month, October, 2016.  All parents/guardians should have received the attached letter in their summer mailing  that  included  a September 26th deadline for any "Opt Outs".   Parents/guardians who do not wish their child's photograph to be featured on our new websites must have checked the appropriate boxes on this form and have sent it back to their child's school.  Please call the District's Office of Public Relations at (845) 353-7013 with any questions regarding this new protocol.  The Media Opt Out Form is one that can be filled out at any time but must be kept at the school building level for easy access by staff and to ensure that the protocol  is effectively followed. Welcome to English as a New Language (ENL) & Bilingual Education

Our District is a diverse community, where all unique cultures and languages are welcomed and embraced. Knowledge, respect and understanding of different cultures is a cornerstone of Nyack Public Schools. Our diversity provides a valuable educational resource and offers excellent opportunities to prepare our students to become engaged citizens of the world.

English as a New Language (ENL) Program Information

English as a New Language (ENL) K-12 Program

Nyack Union Free School District takes great pleasure in welcoming students from around the world.  We presently serve students that represent 14 language groups. The English as a New Language (ENL) program is designed to meet the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades K-12 whose native language is other than English.  The goal of our program is to ensure that all students attain English proficiency via two programs the district offers. Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) is offered in K-2 and English as a New Language program is offered for all grade levels.  The objectives of these programs are to (1) ensure that all English Language Learners develop both Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP); (2) prepare students for mainstream classes and (3) provide ongoing educational assistance. All of the outlined programs are aligned with the Common Core State Standards.

ENL Enrichment Programs

There are several enrichment opportunities available for Nyack English Language Learners. The enrichment programs offered provide additional assistance with homework, study skills, strategies for success in the classroom, academic and linguistic support. The enrichment program also promotes parental involvement using parent workshops. All programs offered are outlined below.

Before and After-school Programs

The purpose of the the Before and After-school Programs is to help assist English Language Learners with homework and address specific skill based assistance as needed.

Saturday and Summer STEM Program

Research indicates that English Language Learners (ELLs) require 5-7 years to acquire language.  In essence, what English Language Learners need is time. Extra time that focuses on specific skills that they are not afforded during the school day.  The Saturday and Summer STEM Programs for ELLs is a 4-6 week program which allows for additional instructional time that integrates the four modalities (speaking, listening, reading and writing). English Language Learners will be taught engineering (building), mathematics, and science principles through a hands-on, collaborative experience that will enhance their academic, language, and social skills. Programs are offered at all grade levels during various times of the school year.
