  • Welcome Back to School!

Join us in partnership as we kick off a new school year and prepare all students to be "Future-Ready".  With a shared vision developed with YOU - our community -  we are focused on seven core competencies representing our Profile of a Nyack Graduate: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Compassion, Cultural Competence, Content Mastery.

"In our schools, we are committed to the belief that all students possess great natural abilities. At the most fundamental level, the focus on education has to be on creating conditions in which students will want and be able to learn.  When children are encouraged to be curious and explore, the learning process opens up to new possibilities."    - James Montesano, Superintendent of Schools

Together, we are building bridges for today's students to cross into tomorrow's world with equity, innovation and optimism.

Welcome to English as a New Language (ENL) & Bilingual Education

Our District is a diverse community, where all unique cultures and languages are welcomed and embraced. Knowledge, respect and understanding of different cultures is a cornerstone of Nyack Public Schools. Our diversity provides a valuable educational resource and offers excellent opportunities to prepare our students to become engaged citizens of the world.

English as a New Language (ENL) Program Information

English as a New Language (ENL) K-12 Program

Nyack Union Free School District takes great pleasure in welcoming students from around the world.  We presently serve students that represent 14 language groups. The English as a New Language (ENL) program is designed to meet the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades K-12 whose native language is other than English.  The goal of our program is to ensure that all students attain English proficiency via two programs the district offers. Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) is offered in K-2 and English as a New Language program is offered for all grade levels.  The objectives of these programs are to (1) ensure that all English Language Learners develop both Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP); (2) prepare students for mainstream classes and (3) provide ongoing educational assistance. All of the outlined programs are aligned with the Common Core State Standards.

ENL Enrichment Programs

There are several enrichment opportunities available for Nyack English Language Learners. The enrichment programs offered provide additional assistance with homework, study skills, strategies for success in the classroom, academic and linguistic support. The enrichment program also promotes parental involvement using parent workshops. All programs offered are outlined below.

Before and After-school Programs

The purpose of the the Before and After-school Programs is to help assist English Language Learners with homework and address specific skill based assistance as needed.

Saturday and Summer STEM Program

Research indicates that English Language Learners (ELLs) require 5-7 years to acquire language.  In essence, what English Language Learners need is time. Extra time that focuses on specific skills that they are not afforded during the school day.  The Saturday and Summer STEM Programs for ELLs is a 4-6 week program which allows for additional instructional time that integrates the four modalities (speaking, listening, reading and writing). English Language Learners will be taught engineering (building), mathematics, and science principles through a hands-on, collaborative experience that will enhance their academic, language, and social skills. Programs are offered at all grade levels during various times of the school year.
